Yet Another Cardiologist Update

I heard from the cardiology office again today (maybe someday I’ll be able to update and say I have an actual prescription).

They were calling to say sorry it’s taking so long to get an appointment and mentioned that the doctor had been on vacation for 2 weeks, which explains the 2 weeks it took for them to get the note to her. I am concerned that no doctor was covering for her while she was out. Isn’t that how it normally works?

So they said something about how the doctor was planning on increasing my clonidine dose till I got in to see her. I said I wasn’t taking it any longer because it was making my blood pressure go UP not down (this was because it was making my heart rate slightly lower, which always increases my blood pressure). So she said she’d give the doctor another message, labeling it high priority since I’m not currently on any BP meds. We’ll see what happens next, I guess.

I forgot to mention before that the first person I talked to said the 2 medications that I requested she prescribe one of contained sulfa so she wouldn’t prescribe. These are the only category of BP drugs that have helped me, but my old family doctor had prescribed the version that DID have sulfa in it so I can’t take it (my health insurance only covers 2 out of like 8 drugs in this category). According to my health care formulary and drugs.com, there are two types of each drug in this category. One has a diuretic and has sulfa. One doesn’t. Shouldn’t a cardiologist know this?

Cardiologist Update

I heard back from the scheduling people at the cardiologist office today. They said the doctor was coming in for a little while tomorrow afternoon and was seeing people on a waiting list and that they could put me on the waiting list tomorrow. I said I couldn’t because we have reservations for tomorrow afternoon. So they said they’d call if the doctor came in another day and was seeing people on a waiting list.

Oh well. I’ll see her at the beginning of December at least. My blood pressure has been like this for months…what’s another few weeks?

Health Update

I got a different asthma med to try today while I was at the allergist. I take Singulair and had been taking Advair Diskus but even the 500 strength didn’t bring me to my pre-asthma breathing. I had mentioned it to my allergist and he told me that when I was low on the Advair he’d switch me to something else, which is Symbicort. I need to finish up the Advair first though so it will still be a few weeks till I try it. I see him again in a month then. I guess I didn’t mention it to him sooner because I thought that’s just how it was going to be with asthma. But I realized when I was on the prednisone in September for bronchitis that it doesn’t have to be that way…assuming that there’s something else that will allow me to breath as well as the prednisone did.

I also called my cardiologist today because they never called me back after I called about taking a different blood pressure med around…October 20th? So I talked to a nurse and she said the doctor had just received the note yesterday. I didn’t say anything about it but I was thinking…what the hell???? They’re a CARDIOLOGY office. They should deliver/read notes before TWO WEEKS. The nurse said the doctor wanted to see me before prescribing something because of my allergies and asthma and such. Understandable. Then she said that Dec. 4 appointment that was scheduled was a little far away and I should be seen sooner and that she’ll have the schedulers call me (I hope they actually do). Again, I was thinking…if she thinks I should be seen sooner…shouldn’t I have been seen TWO WEEKS AGO???

Somewhat Productive

I have been somewhat productive today so far, for me at least. This is nothing compared to what I could accomplish if I were healthier, but anyway.

I decided to stop taking the birth control pills a couple weeks ago. I have been on them since 1998 with only two breaks: when I was in the hospital in 2005 and in 2007 when they were testing for Cushing’s. Both of those were only a month’s time. My rheumy said at the last appointment in August that they could be causing my high liver enyzmes. Personally, I think it’s the insulin resistance causing that, but I read recently that bc pills can make insulin resistance worse so maybe indirectly they are. I also wanted to see if my high heart rate and blood pressure would be any lower without them. I kind of doubt they will.

Speaking of my high blood pressure, I called my cardiologist the Friday before last to see if she would put me on something since the clonidine made my BP worse instead of better and I don’t see her again till Dec. 2. Haven’t heard back yet. I guess I’ll have to call again. Unless they’re just mailing me a prescription…I think they did that once before when I called because she wrote the prescription wrong. You would think they could at least call to let you know they’re mailing a prescription.

So that brings me back to why I was productive. Since I stopped the bc pills, I’ve been feeling like painting again, but my craft/art/puzzle table was a mess. So was my cabinet of art supplies. I cleaned up both of those and decided to work on my unicorn paint by number again. While I was working on it, I discovered that one of the little paint pots is missing! This is not good. I have no idea where it got to, but as it’s little and rolls, I sure it ended up being a cat toy. Who knows where it could be now? I’m going to have Joe move the fridge out when he gets home. There’s too much dust under there to see with a flashlight. I didn’t see it under the stove. I looked all around the kitchen/den area and if it’s not under the fridge…I’m not sure where else to look. A cat could have carried it to any of the other rooms.

Still Sick

I’m still sick. Not as sick as I was. The steroids helped A LOT. I could breathe again. I felt better than I had in a few years actually. I could walk up the stairs at work without feeling like I was going to collapse and without being completely out of breath by the top. My knees didn’t hurt. My brain fog went away. I could think. I had energy. I got things done. I cooked. I even cleaned. It’s too bad I can’t be on them all the time.

Then two days afterwards (this is also the time the antibiotic wore off (supposed to be take for 5 days lasts for 10 days or something?) I felt sick again. Like I had when I thought it was just a cold, before the bronchitis coughing and wheezing started. I had my follow-up checkup on the second day of this. He did some blood work and gave me a different antibiotic. It doesn’t really seem to be having an effect. The doctor called yesterday and said that the blood work showed an elevated white blood cell count and high CRP which means I have a bacterial infection. To come back in two weeks for a checkup and if I’m still not better they’ll repeat the bloodwork and try a different antibiotic.

I also go back to the cardiologist for a checkup Friday and to the allergist for one Monday. It would be nice to go a month without having a see a doctor.

I never wrote about the Effexor either. My rheumy prescribed it in May for my fibromyalgia. I took it one night and that was it. I didn’t sleep, was shaking and very nauseous and had a terrible headache. I saw him again in August and he said to try taking half of the dosage. I haven’t done this yet, partly because I’ve been sick ever since and party because I’m just not sure I want to be on it. I’ve heard about people getting really sick if they forget a dose and things like that plus that it has horrible withdrawal.

Cooking

We’ve been doing a lot more cooking the past few months. Most of the cooking is from recipes (online and from books) although I did come up with a barbeque (sloppy joe) recipe that we really like that was frankensteined from several different recipes based on what we had in the house. Maybe if people are interested I’ll post or link to some of the recipes that actually turned out well (with pictures). Some weren’t as tasty as we thought they would be. I also learned that I don’t really like cilantro last weekend.

I’ve been trying to eat low-carb and have been avoiding whole wheat as well, as it seems to make me nauseaous. I also can’t have Splenda as that makes me nauseaous as well. I do okay with stevia though in my tea.

Yesterday I made a mexican dip and we had chicken and broccoli in the wok. They both turned out well, but my favorite taco/mexican dip is still one that I learned from my friend’s mom in high school. Today I’m making chili in the crock pot. I haven’t tried this recipe before. I haven’t really found a chili recipe that I really like yet. Tomorrow we’re making cole slaw to take to a small family picnic at my parents’.

I love measuring and mixing up ingredients, but I’m horrible at chopping so Joe usually gets stuck with that. I do well with ground beef but won’t touch or cook chicken so Joe gets stuck with that as well.

Last weekend I made a homemade salsa and guacamole. I liked the guacamole, but didn’t like the salsa (it had cilantro in it). We also tried to make taco shells out of fried cheese based on a recipe earlier this week but that didn’t turn out as well as I had hoped.
