SWG and EQII

I was just reading back through the Group Blog I was in for Star Wars Galaxies. What I found most interesting was this post I made on November 6. I’ve been trying to figure out why I stopped playing. Was it because Joe didn’t play much? Did I burnout on the game? Or what?

I still had things to do. I had professions I was working on mastering. I hadn’t been to the geo caves or successfully completed the Death Watch Bunker. I think the problem was with missions. The missions for my level were too easy. I had no risk of dying, with buffs and armor. I could have fought without them. I had done it before and it was much more interesting. But I didn’t just want to kill things, I wanted to get XP to progress in my profession. In order to get a mission that offered good XP and was more of a “challenge” for my level (and often wasn’t much of a challenge), I had to be in a group of 6 or more people (approx.). Since I didn’t want to share the XP by fighting in actual group, this meant joining a solo group. Sometimes solo groups were easily available, but sometimes they weren’t. I started getting frustrated. Mindlessly fighting huurtons and pikets wasn’t much fun. Then they announced the solo group nerf. Previously, solo group missions gave out about 40k credits per mission, on an average. The highest mission I could get for my level was 9k (these were both on Dantooine). There’s a big difference. They changed it so you got a percentage of the mission reward based on the # in the group (so 40k/10 or so = 4k…less than one I could get on my own). It wasn’t so much that I wouldn’t be able to afford to buy anything anymore…the inflated economy would lower eventually, I would hope. Plus I could get discounts from my guild. It was the maintence costs for my harvestors and my houses. I wasn’t selling anything yet to make money that way because I didn’t have a vendor and my products weren’t good enough to sell yet. Pretty much all my money went into my harvestors, collecting things to use to make things. [By the way, I had amassed a decent collection and kind of feel sad that I'll never get to use my meat, flora, etc. ]

And so, I think what I just talked about was the reason. If I could have gotten missions on my own to fight bull rancors, maybe I would have stayed. But I couldn’t and random spawns were very rare. You had to search all over the planet for a non-mission spawn and everyone else was doing that to grind Jedi (actually, they were killing your mission spawns too). It just wasn’t fun. Plus, I don’t think that I should have been able to solo a bull rancor in the first place. Everything just got so unbalanced combat-wise. I didn’t feel like sticking around waiting for the combat rebalance, whenever that’s finished. Maybe I’ll come back then if I hear lots of rave reviews. But I don’t know. Most everyone in my guild has left and it wouldn’t be the same.

Part of why I like Everquest II is that I don’t have that problem. I don’t need a “mission” get to get something for my level. There’s plenty of random spawns and once you start fighting, no one can take it from you because of locked encounters. Sometimes it can be hard finding something I need to kill for a quest because someone else has killed them all, but they respawn eventually. It can be frustrating, because I’m not the most patient person, but I usually just go find something else I need to do. But I can attempt to kill anything I want to. There are access quests for certain areas, but pretty much unless you can do the access quests, you don’t belong in there. I can fight things below my level, at my level, or above my level. And I can do so without having to find a solo group for it or spend 30 minutes running around a planet looking for a spawn that was a challenge, but wouldn’t kick my butt (Nightsisters).

SWG

Well, I did it.

I cancelled my two Star Wars Galaxies accounts. I haven’t played since the beginning of November. I had been planning on playing again after the combat revamp (whenever they finish it), but I don’t know. The guild I was in is basically gone. Most people have left, including the leader. Most went to World of Warcraft, some to EQII, others to real life. I hadn’t mastered the professions I was working on, but I just lost my drive to play. I was very very obsessed with that game for about two months, but then kind of lost my interest. I don’t know if I’ll play again once the combat revamp is complete. I like EQII a lot and Joe and I are interested in playing Guild Wars once it comes out in April.

So last night Joe, myself, and his friend Jason from work decide to go kill kimogilas (note that I am talking about SWG). We arrive at kimogila town and quickly take out 4 hatchlings. We’re thinking “yeah! we can do this!”. We’re buffed and have comp armor. There’s a Giant Dune Kimogila there. We start attacking and then I examine it. Now, I have three pistols I carry with me. A DX2 (acid), a FWG5 (heat), and a Republic Blaster (energy). The GDK was 100% resistant to heat and acid and 80% to energy. So I wasn’t going to be doing much damage to it (need to pick up a striker or tangle pistol…although that’s still 65% resistance). Some NPC started attacking Joe with a launcher pistol. I was like, I’ll take care of him since I’m not doing much to the Kimogila. Hah. He was like a super NPC or something. My attacks could do damage to him, but barely were (I didn’t think to note what his HAM was). My health was going down (was also diseased from the Kimogila) and my mind was dropping fast even though I had drank brandy. I had to run away because my mind was almost gone. Joe started attacking him then and the Kimogila started attacking me after finishing off Jason (Kimos deathblow). It actually wasn’t hurting me too bad, but I just wasn’t doing any damage to it. The launcher pistol guy killed Joe and I was left alone with both the Kimo and that guy attacking me. Then the server message came up that the server was going down in 15 minutes (this was not normal as it was 3:30 am and it doesn’t go down until 7). I started running but couldn’t find my bike for like 5 minutes because it was dark. Just when I found my bike, they stopped attacking me. I made it back to safety and logged out. That whole hunt did not go as planned. We would have been fine probably if not for that NPC.

I ended up with 992 mind wounds. 992! The most I ever got before was about 30! After I get back from my parents for dinner, I’m going to have to go to a cantina and get my mind wounds healed. After that, I’m going to tame a bull bantha baby, assuming I can find one. I just really want a bantha. Yesterday I tamed a wasteland cu pa.

I read the SWG boards after it went down to find out why. Some of the screenshots from other servers were hilarious. Our server actually didn’t have any problems.

publish 10

So Publish 10 came out today in SWG. This is the addition of the new Jedi quests. And the new force status command to see if you’re “glowy”. Joe and I both have “You feel a surge in the force”. There’s another step in between that and glowy. We both need three more content badges.

Remember how I posted the other day about the auto-pull slicing tools from crates bug? They had said they would fix it before the publish was live. Guess what? They didn’t. Apparently they also re-broke bounty hunter droids. And not to mention the server lags. No one has been able to log into my server for the past three+ hours. They’re supposed to be doing a reboot right now. There were out of control spawns at several locations. Many people died because of this and you know, when you die and you’re not insured your things decay.

It’s just all so annoying. Aren’t you supposed to play games for fun and relaxation? Not to become annoyed?

Not that the game is usually annoying. I usually love it. It’s just frustrating that they overlook “unimportant” things and only seem to care about things like Jedis sometime. Not that there aren’t plenty of complaints about the new Jedi revamp…

Time for more SWG screenshots (inspired by Krissy)

Joe and I. I visited an image designer this past weekend and got a new hairstyle

I got stuck in a rock while on my speederbike swoop. I got off the swoop and could only get back on after I stored it.

More Star Wars Galaxies talk.

Last night Joe and I were up till almost 7 am doing The Warren themepark on Dantooine. This was only semi-planned. We planned on doing that after he got off work yesterday with two of his friends from there. I figured we’d be done in time for our usual bedtime of 4:30/5 am. Joe and I were ready to go by 3 am. But by the time his friends got home, got online, got body and mind buffed, and were ready it was 4 am. We went anyway. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Joe did die once and had to be cloned because he took on too many guys with stun batons by himself, but otherwise it was fine. The only bad thing was that my buffs ran out before we completed it so I was very paranoid about getting hit. And also the fact that we were trying to find out way out around 6:30 and were worried about getting caught in there during the server reboot at 7. I also didn’t appreciate it that it was almost completely light out by the time we went to bed. I ended up not being able to fall asleep till after 8 for some reason and then slept until 5. I was disturbed when I had the thought upon waking that most people work from 8-5…and that I had just slept from 8-5.

We got two badges out of it at least.

Reading the Professions forums on the SWG boards can be a little depressing. Pretty much every profession has a thread of “things that have to be fixed”. And you know, the devs don’t fix anything. Something on the Smuggler board particularly annoyed me. As of now you can autopull slicing tools from crates. So on the test center for publish 10 for no reason they took away the ability to autopull any smuggler tool from crates. They said later that it was some change in code elsewhere that caused it to happen and that they’d fix it…but who knows if they will? That will be a huge pain if they don’t change it. You need three things to slice a weapon or armor: a laser precision knife with at least 2 charges, a molecular clamp, and an upgrade kit. Plus the item. If you’re doing a suit of armor, it would be very easy to run out of room in your inventory if you try to pull it all out ahead of time. Plus a lot of people slice in bulk for weapon or armorsmith. It just adds useless time wasted. It wasn’t broken so why do that instead of fix something that was broken? Like our skill tree documentation.

It’s just so frustrating that so many professions have so many problems.
