I managed to get an A in Web Design, keeping my 4.0 average. It’s odd when I look at my college page on here…at my time at Millersville I got mostly C’s and now at AIU I have all A’s.

This session is Advanced Typography. We’ll be making a 6-8 page magazine over the next 5 weeks. All the assigments sound really cool. This week we’re making the logo and cover. I have yet to start though because I’ve been sick since Sunday. I really want to make it good so I have something great to show off in my portfolio.

As soon as I’m done being sick, I’ll post a picture of my hair. I kind of look dead the past few days.

Tomorrow is Joe and I’s two year anniversary. We’re not going to be able to celebrate till Thursday though because he works tomorrow till late. I can’t believe it’s been that long. In December we’ll have been engaged for a year.

I’ve been rereading V.C. Andrews books lately. There’s something comforting in how much the characters lives suck yet they never give up.

web design

On our Discussion Board for class, we have an introductory thread where we post about ourselves. So far, it appears that half the students in the class (at least) have no web design experience at all. They’ve said they’re rather intimidated by the assignments. I can understand that. The “suggested assignment times” have increased for this class. They were 3-4 hours usually per assignment and now they’re 6-8 hours. In Advanced Graphic Design, my assignment times were pretty close to the suggested times. But for Illustration…I’d spend sometimes 20 hours on one project. I’m not sure if that was because Illustrator was new to me or because I chose complicated pieces and tried to make them as good as possible. What I’m just trying to say is that the suggested assignment times aren’t always accurate.

Sometimes these classes seem really hard. Not to me, because I have a strong graphics program background, but for people with little experience in that. There are no prerequisites for this degree other than an Associates degree in any subject or equivalent credits. I’ve been lucky so far. I’ve had to learn three new programs for this. The first (and hardest) was Illustrator. For that class, Illustrator was the only thing I had to learn. My Photoshop background made this easier because I was familiar with the interface. For InDesign, that was also the only new program I had to learn and that was very simple to learn. But in that class, we also used Photoshop for the first time. So some students had to learn both Photoshop and InDesign that session. This time, I need to learn Dreamweaver. I’m already very familiar with Photoshop and the basic concepts of web design, so it’s basically just how to work Dreamweaver that I need to learn. For other students, they’re still just learning Photoshop, plus they’ll need to learn CSS.

On a side note, since I’ve learned Illustrator I often wish for some of the tools from that in Photoshop. Photoshop felt very foreign to me the first time I used it after using Illustrator several hours every day for 5 weeks.

dreamweaver

Got my book and software for Web Design today. I got a copy of Macromedia Studio MX 2004 and the book is Dreamweaver MX 2004 Hands-On-Training. Honestly, I don’t know who picks these books out for us. There are always much better ones they could have picked. They use the same site idea throughout (an eyeglasses store) and most of their designs are table-based.

I think we should have had two textbooks for this course. One on how to use Dreamweaver and another on actual web design. Because if you’re trying to learn design from that book, you’re screwed. Their designs look like ones from 1996. I do have an Advanced Web Design course coming up next January so hopefully that will actually cover design.

However, I’m pleased that we’re using Dreamweaver. I need to learn it and don’t want to use it for my own sites.

life

Just an update since I haven’t updated since Saturday (not too long ago, that would not have been unusual). I haven’t commented on LJ or sites the past few days either. Joe’s been off work the past three days (two he was scheduled for, one he called of sick) so I’ve been hanging out with him and playing Star Wars Galaxies. Last night we played mini golf, which was fun.

I haven’t done anything much towards finding a job. I check web site listings every so often but nothing still. Well, actually, I did take one step towards finding a job on Saturday. I bought a domain for my porfolio: nontextualmatter.com. Now I need to make the site. I don’t know how much it will help me find a job, but at least I’ll have a place I can refer them to so they can see my work (assuming any graphic design positions even come up).

Amazingly, I got an A in Advanced Graphic Design. Barely. I had an 89.5. Pretty much the entire course my grade has been hovering round an 89. He gave me full points on my critique, which pushed it into the .5 realm. I’m very happy. I have my 4.0 still.

I’m anxious to see what books and software we’re using for web design. The obvious choice would be Dreamweaver, but I’m kind of worried they’ll make us use Abobe GoLive, since it’s part of the Creative Suite that we already have. That wouldn’t be good though because pretty much all web design jobs require Dreamweaver knowledge.

I’m glad we have two weeks off though. I needed a break.

homework

I’m having a really hard time making myself do this critique for my last assignment, even though we had to pick a design as a small group and my group picked the design I suggested.

I just feel like this is such a stupid project. I really don’t think it’s going to help me become a graphic designer at all. As I said before, we did pretty much this exact assignment before in another class.

I know I need to just get it done and over with but I can’t think of much to say about the design.

movies

I’m in a cross-stitching mood again finally, thanks to Mythical Dragon (progress pic coming tonight or tomorrow). This means I spend a lot of time watching things on TV. I spend a lot of my time watching The-N, such shows as Degrassi, Sabrina, and Clueless (and Full House, on different channels). I’ve pretty much seen all the episodes of all the shows (I used to watch Sabrina, Clueless, and Full House each week when they were on) so that can sometimes get boring. Our OnDemand hasn’t been working for the past two weeks (need to call to reschedule appt) and usually the movies on TV suck.

This past week I borrowed Under a Tuscan Sun (which I really liked) and Fifty First Dates (didn’t like quite as much) from my parents, who had rented them. Tonight I got two movies from Blockbuster (using free coupons Joe got from someone at work) and borrowed three movies from my brother’s family. They are: Star Wars Episodes I and II, 10 Ways to Lose a Guy, LotR: The Return of the King, and Underworld. I’ve seen them all except Underworld. Joe and I are also going to be watching Star Wars Episodes IV, V, VI sometime soon.

My last assignments for Advanced Graphic Design are due tomorrow and I haven’t started them. The one is a discussion board thing as usual and the other is a critique and evaluation of a design. I think that’s a really sucky final project. That should have been the DB topic or something. We had to do the same thing as a final project in Theory and History of Visual Communication. I just really think we should have had another actual project. We need things to put in our portfolio and potential employers aren’t really going to care about a critique. I’ll just do them quick tomorrow. I have an 89 in that class. I don’t know if it’s going to end up an A or not.
