Today I let Ash (the ferret) out for a little while in the bedroom. I was in there with him and shut the door. The cats were in the rest of the apartment somewhere. A minute after I shut the door, Akasha opened it and came it (the cats have recently learned that if they hook their paw under the bedroom door and pull, the door unlatches and opens). I shut the door. A little while later Spencer opened the door and came in. But all that’s besides the point.
This was Akasha’s first face-to-face meeting with Ash. She’s seen him in his cage but that’s it. Ash walked over to her and put his face to hers. She made her “smelly face”. Ash went on his way. Every so often he’d wander over to her and sniff at her. She’d just stand there or back away. I don’t think she knew what to make of him. She followed him all around, just watching him. She wasn’t aggressive towards him at all, except she did raise her paw when he cornered her by the hamper. She was laying by my sneakers when he came over and tried to crawl inside one (he’s bigger than my sneaker so it was a futile effort). She backed away looking at him. You could tell she was thinking something like “what is that smelly thing and what is it doing?”.
All in all, it went well. I imagine someday soon they’ll be chasing each other around.
