red hat society

I have been seeing red hat merchandise in stores for a few months now, mostly crafts store. I really wasn’t sure what it meant until I looked it up a few minutes ago.

Today a group of about 5 or so older women came into the store, all wearing red hats, some with feathers, and purple clothes. I was a bit suprised. And curious as well. I was tempted to ask them about it, but didn’t.

The name they gave us for their back door pick-up was the Red Hat Society so it was easy to google it. This is from the site:
“Welcome to the place where there is fun after fifty (and before) for women of all walks of life. We believe silliness is the comedy relief of life and, since we are all in it together, we might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together. Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next.”

I imagine it’s something like sororites for older women. You can be part of it if you’re not 50 yet but you’re supposed to wear a pink hat and lavendar clothes until you’re 50. Then you can wear the purple and red. They have chapters you can join and one is right around here. I think it’s a pretty cool idea. I’d love to wear a red hat, especially with feathers. I wonder if it will still be around when I’m 50.
