I finally managed to create something other than a bunch of squiggles and deformed circles in Illustrator. I’ve always avoided the pen tool in Photoshop and while I’ve tried to use Illustrator before, I’ve always just ended up frustrated. In order to use Illustrator, I’ve had to completely change my way of creating art. I’ve wondered lately if my traditional art background has been hurting me in this. I was thinking the other day about one of our future assignments, to create a self-portrait. I began to imagine creating it but realized that I was imagining it in terms of brushstrokes and building up shading. You can’t do this in Illustrator. Images are created there by joining lines and shapes. I’ve never really had to do this before.
Reading the first three chapters in the Illustrator CS WOW book helped some, but I had to look around online for some tutorials on how to use the pen tool. It doesn’t describe it really in the book. I think I’m getting the hang of Illustrator now, but it’s so frustrating because there’s so much I don’t know how to do yet. I was trying to add a gradiant but couldn’t figure out how to change the color of it. I was trying to crop the image, but there’s no crop tool. It automatically does it. There’s so much I take for granted knowing how to do in Photoshop and then go to do it in Illustrator and find it it’s different. I really want to learn how to use this program properly. It makes such great images.

Here is my first actual image created in Illustrator. It’s not much, but it something.
